HYPERBARIC FAQS

HBOT or hyperbaric oxygen therapy, is a treatment used to speed up the healing process of wounds that won’t heal, infections affecting tissues, carbon monoxide poisoning, and gangrene. To help you better understand how this treatment works and to find out if you are a good candidate for it, we have put a list of frequently asked questions together here at Midwest Functional Health in Waterloo, IN.

What are the Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

HBOT works in the following ways:

  • Aids in the healing of wounds by supplying oxygen-rich plasma to tissue starved for oxygen

  • Prevents reperfusion injuries

  • Strengthens the body’s immune system and disables toxins of certain bacteria

  • Encourages the formation of new blood vessels and stimulates cells to create certain substances

What Should I Wear During Treatment?

Safety always comes first. Clothing will be provided for you to wear during your treatment, and you should avoid wearing the following:

  • Hairpieces and wigs

  • Makeup

  • Loose-fitting dentures

  • Contact lenses

  • Skin lotions

  • Nail polish that has been on less than 24 hours

  • Cologne, aftershave, or perfume

  • Oils or hair spray

  • Jewelry including both earrings and watches

You may not have anything in your mouth such as candy or gum during your treatment. Cellphones will not be permitted into the chamber.

What Should I Expect Before Treatment?

Your vital signs will be checked, and you will be asked a series of questions. The inside of your ears will also be examined. If you are a diabetic, your blood sugar will be checked. Various safety checks must be performed before treatment.

Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Painful?

You should not experience any type of pain during hyperbaric oxygen therapy. You may feel a slight pressure in your ears at the start of your treatment similar to pressure you feel when flying in a plane or driving up mountains. You may have to clear your ears by swallowing, yawning, or opening and closing your mouth. If you begin to feel congested or ill, you should let our staff know right away.

How Long Do Treatments Last and How Many Will I Need?

Typically, treatments last for about two hours. One treatment is given per day Monday through Friday. If you need more than one treatment per day, your provider will let you know. The number of treatments a patient needs is dependent upon their condition and how well they respond to therapy. Most patients receive between 30 and 40 treatments.
